Microsoft Battleground (stylized as Microsoft battle X ground, and simply nicknamed Battleground) is a 4-player fighting game created as a counterpart to Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. series, and Sony's PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. The game features many characters from Microsoft-owned franchises. The game is scheduled to be released in 2016 for the Xbox One. The game was originally developed by Blackout Software, before development shifted to Unversed Entertainment.
The game is a 2.5D fighter, akin to Smash Bros., where two-four fighters from various series battle each other in various stages filled with hazards. Items both based upon Microsoft titles and of original creation will occasionally spawn on the stage for the fighters to use. Fighters have special moves unique to them, and attacking opponents releases X Jewels. Collecting 100 X Jewels grants the player a point. Attacking opponents also releases Y Jewels. Collecting 50 of these allows the player to do their XY Attack, a super-powerful attack that makes foes lose a lot of X Jewels.
There are thirty-six playable characters included within the Xbox 360 version, with an additional ten being added into the Xbox One version.
