Danganronpa 2.9: Welcome to Despair District is a visual noval murder mystery video game developed by Zeta Labs and published by Spike Chunsoft, making this the first Danganronpa game to not be made by Spike Chunsoft. It is a game set between the events of Super Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair and Danganronpa 3. It maintains several of the previous games gameplay concepts as well adding a few of their own.
Chika Kasumi, the Ultimate Journalist, is sent to investigate a location that is related to the Worst Incident of Mankind, a place entitled Shinpi Street. As soon as she enters the street's limits, Chika falls unconscious. Upon waking up, she starts suffering from amnesia, only remembering her ultimate title and name. She meets up with a group of talented high schoolers and meets the "mayor" of the street, a tall and thin man dressed as a gentleman named Luce. Luce reveals that the he has renamed the street to Despair District and that he has put barriers everywhere around the district making it impossible to leave. Unless they can commit the perfect murder and not be found out during a Public Trial, they won't be able to leave the city.

|Chika Kasumi||The Ultimate Journalist. A wise lady with a keen eye. She is a lady that prefers to see the "clear" picture before making claims. She is a bit creeped out by seeing dead corpse up close for the first time in her career, but nonetheless she remains calm.|
|Yuina Hoshiko||The Ultimate Biologist. Known as the "pop star scientist", Yuina is the child prodigy of the Hoshiko family. A friendly person all around, although one that doesn't knows how to pick the right words. She is a bit ditzy and can easily be distracted.|
|Ryuu Yuuto||The Ultimate Heel Wrestler. A popular and fan favorite member of the UTWF, portraying the character of the "Shining Dragon", an over the top and hammy parody of martial arts films of the 70s. Although he has a quite threathing appearance, he is a gentle and smart person and one that gets easily with people.|
|Saburou Hiraku||The Ultimate Bandit. The third son of the Hiraku family, a pioneer on the field of stealing, managing to steal the places that people that it would be impossible to do so. An anti-social person, who sees friendship as a weakness that affects his job. Steals without shame and his victims may not even notice.|
- A common theme of the game is the references to the song "Hotel California" by Eagles. Luce, the main antagonist, makes references to the song's lyrics during the game's prologue and several of the song's lyrics are the chapter titles.
